Let me emphasize this again - what I said is
my very own subjective view.
To me, Klonoa is not something anthropomorphic at all. I see him as a real resident of another world for "the adventure we had". What he looks is what "humans in another world" would be.
Sounds crazy, huh? But that's my reason to not call Klonoa a cat, a rabbit or something between the two. (Hmm, what if I'm just allergic to the name "cabbit"?)
Maybe each tribe of Phantomile have its unique species name, maybe not - then what's the point argue about it? It seems the development team didn't give us a defined answer intentionally, so do really need one? Isn't it more intriguing to let everyone find their own answer?
These are my strange feelings. I hope I've made myself clear. Once again - don't be too serious.

Unchanging? but dosen't Phantomille makes more sense than Unknown?
Well, you are right. But don't deny the possibility ;3 Remember what I said? He might be a "human of another world".
Yeah...Phantomilian does makes more sense than "unknown" while being enough obscure, though it's not an ideal one to me; however, it's hard to find a real good one unless we ask the creators.
(OH Mother of Mercy. Who put the "species" property in the Wiki?)
