I'm not really sure. I know I've seen a few times where the gem on his ring will turn clear white ish as well but I haven't bothered to record that.
-Next time I play through DtP yet again for the ??? time I'll probably catch it and make a gif of it then. -

@nub_hat  mentioned trying to complete the game without getting any dreamstones or lives .. so I did with using popka and anything else I could come up with. There are 2 exceptions in that One place in Volkan Inferno and another in the Kingdom of Sorrow where you literally have no choice but to walk through a life to progress after they start spawning all over the place.
I'll just call it an 0noa run.
