I personally think it can be done well, so it depends on how it's done. Otherwise I have no qualms about it.

I've designed a few before, they can be really fun. Maintaining the essence of the character's design in creative ways is neat. Yknow, the ones that make you go "yeah that is exactly the same character, I can feel it."
There are some REALLY bad ones out there, but there are plenty of good ones too.
