I'm excited that Niantic Labs is working with Nintendo and The Pokemon Company on this because they pulled off something like it with Ingress (which I'm a fan of), so I have high hopes for this and I think it'll be really interesting to see what they do with it. If I remember correctly, they had plans to connect it to the main series games, so I'm wondering if it'll work somewhat like a Pokewalker from Gen 4.
