Original or Wii Remake

Not to be picky, but I prefer the original. I haven't played the remake even though I want to get it one day, but I've seen enough to know two things; They've made Klonoa sound FAR too older even compared to how he sounded in Lunatea's Veil. In the original, he was just a child for all I could tell. Why'd they age him up like this? And also, you can unlock more hearts in the remake, while in the original you had only three the entire game. While yes, this is a good feature, but the game, while difficult to an extant, was easy enough to where the three heart limit was enough, ESPECIALLY since these three hearts gave you a total of six hits before losing a life. That's far more than you'll ever need in a game such as this.

Actually the 5 hearts are always there so that means 10 hits. The american voice SUCKS, but there's still the possibility of putting it in phantomilian and some non american voices sound really good (italian is literally a kid's voice likes the one on the dubs of the generic anime shows). I still prefer the original

They're booth good, in my opinion. The only problems I have with the Wiimake are how the cutscene animations are so lackluster and the bosses being a bit TOO easy (even for a Klonoa game.)

Personally, I would say either, but I've only played the Wii Remake, so I have to say the remake. But I'm not going to talk abou that as this post is just me talking about something that frustrates me and I need to get this off my chest. On several sites like YouTube, etc., it's rather common to come across someone's opinion on a game and Klonoa is no exception. I get kinda frustrated at some of them because A BUNCH OF PEOPLE (not ALL of them mind you) call the Wii Remake a bad game JUSY BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE THE VOICE ACTING AND/OR THE ANIMATION. Coming from someone who likes the game and the voice acting and the animation (I'm sorry. Don't kill me, but It's my opinion and I like Eric Stitt's Klonoa voice), this is frustrating because of a several things: 1). Most people dislike the voice simply because of how it sounds. Does it really matter what he sounds like? We din't know his age at all and besides, bad voice acting would technically sound as if people were just reading the script. Eric makes him sound emotional when he needs to (except for when he says,"Yeah. But we know the moon pendant is in the temple of the sun. How are we supposed to get there?"), especially in the ending("Ah, HEWPOE!") and he does a really good job at voicing Klonoa. You can't hate in someone's voice just because of how he sounds. Games like Epic Mickey have been critisized for not having voice acting, so having voice acting in the game was a good thing. Not to

Are you kidding me? Voice acting does not have any affect on marketing and you guys know it. You're just looking for something to blame it on. 3). People hate the animation. How this frustrates me is that no one bothers to explain how it's bad when in reality, it's looks pretty good (on my TV at least). What I mean is that people hate the animation and why? Because Klonoa dosen't lift his ear up in the scene with the soldier. How this is frustrates me is because the the PS1 version in that part of the Cutscene, the soldier whispers and Klonoa lifts his ear up to hear what he's saying. In the Wii version, the soldier IS TALKING ALOUD AT THAT POINT. So there would really be no need for him to lift his ear up because he and Hewpoe can easily hear what he's saying. I'm not disrespecting anyone's opinions on the remake (though if I seem like it I apologize), but come on, are you really going to hate on a remake just because of things so minor? This is technically going the Sonic fanbade route (but don't get me started on that). I just can't believe people are letting minor things be a reason why they hate the remake. It's just so frustrating. NOTE: Any thing that is in all caps is just for emphasize.

I think Sonic is precisely a good comparison. Because Sonic at its launch was ground breaking, it pushed the capabilities of the hardware to its maximum. Klonoa DtP was the best that it could have been given the PlayStation's hardware: stunning visual effects both during gameplay and during cutscenes, and beautiful stereo soundtrack. It gives a uniform vibe of quality craftsmanship. The Wii remake is not up to this task. The sound is not orchestrated nor true 5.1, and the characters in the cutscenes are stiff. The cutscenes are worse when they should be better given the hardware. Compare this to how Super Mario Galaxy looks and feels on the Wii (amazing). Klonoa Wii isn't as good as it could be. Meanwhile, Klonoa DtP had nothing to envy from other PlayStation platformers of its time.

I really can't complain anyhow, because making an amazing remake would simply not be an economically feasible project. The sales of the original were disheartening, not by any means great. Klonoa isn't really that popular.

I prefer wii remake on the gameplay, but original on cutscenes. On the wii Klonoa never talks for himself, just accepts everything Hewpoe said, kinda dumb.

I only played the original PS1 game once, in fact the Wii remake was my first game. I really like the graphics, but compared to the original it's really lacking in many parts. Klonoa has no real personality here, so I can't really feel for the game as much as I found myself with Klonoa 2. The cinematics of the original are far superior obviously, far more colorful and enchanting, while the Wii one obviously lacked the detail and the charm in that. I was also disappointed at how the cutscenes were animated. It's like they rushed it, and didn't have time to fully animate the characters in the cutscenes, instead just switching between idle animation loops and actions, making the characters feel stiff and lifeless. The way the characters behaved totally reminded me of scripting npcs in Half-Life mods, and that's ancient. I know the same technique was used in Klonoa 2, but there it was done very well.

Also difficulty was reduced, and Klonoa 2 wasn't very hard to begin with, so there's not as much of a challenge. And for the voice acting, I liked most of the English voices, but Eric Stitt... just really made Klonoa feel weird. He sounds like 17, when he's supposed to be what, eight? Now I would switch over to the Phantomilian, but apart from Klonoa's voice actor, everyone else just sounds... awkward, like they didn't put any effort into making it sound like actual gibberish. Like it was just done in a hurry.

So yes, I prefer the original. Now of course I'm not saying the Wii remake is bad, it's a good game, but so far it's the game that has the most flaws, and that's gonna stick out in this franchise, where the main games are nothing but masterpieces thus far.

EXACTLY, the animations didn't have enough keyframes, I'm gonna explain what I mean: Animations are composed by keyframes. Keyframes, are basically the points where the model moves to. Animations look smooth cause there's smoothing, for example if you wanted to wave an arm with 3 keyframes doing a triangle, the animation would instantly switch to the next animation so doing sharp turns. With smoothing it gets curves instead of "spiky" switches between each frame. They just didn't do enough frames for Klonoa Wii and putted a lot of smoothing, so everything looks just weird. The same exact engine used in Klonoa 2, is still used by Namco as it's their engine used for all the games. That engine is famous for the movements style as you can still see some smoothed moves in games like the Naruto series etc, but they just did it wrong in KWii. If you're not yet convinced, watch a random cutscene in Klonoa 2 then watch one from the Naruto series then watch one from Klonoa Wii.

Now that you mention it... oh yeah, I noticed that aswell, because a lot of Klonoa's animations were directly ported over from Klonoa 2, and those have a lot of fluidity and detail, while some of the animations in the cutscenes did seem to be lacking in keyframe resolution. I was actually referring to how awkwardly sequences were timed and scripted, with some lasting too long, being triggered at the wrong time, and the characters even facing in the wrong direction when throwing a frenzy.

They must have really rushed the Wii remake.
