Rise of the Robots (and other bad fighting games)

I figured I might as well make a topic on this game, since we've talked about it for a while in the shoutbox.

For those not in the know, Rise of the Robot was a game that was extremely hyped in the early 90s and released in 1994 on almost every system, and 1995 on even more. Just about everything but the Game Boy and anything Atari made (For some reason) got the game.

The game was touted to revolutionise fighting games, with stunning pre-rendered 3D graphics.

The only thing is revolutionised was how to scam people. Sure, it looked pretty, but gameplay was stiff, there were barely any special moves and depending on the version you played, the AI were either a total pushover or downright cheated.

They also hyped that it had music by Briain May but all but the 3DO and CD-i versions had any music he composed for. The rest just had samples from 2 songs from his "Back into the Light" album.

Matt McMuscles did a history of the game's development as part of his What Happened? series.

I personally find the game super fascinating, it's definitely a time capsule for the early 90s, and it's fun to think about what people thought the game was going to be based on all the coverage it got.

Have you guys played this? What did you think?

Honestly, i can't stand this game, i tried to, HARD, but, i couldn't, i just couldn't...  Don't play this game, even for the funny FMVs in every single version of this game, it's not worthy...

But...

I think this is almost nothing compared to Catfight - The Ultimate Female Fighting game. I used to consider this the worst, but i forgot about it, i reminded my self of it, and, boy, no, RoTR isn't as bad as this.  x_x
Is this a forum they forgot, or has the forum forgot them?

Haha! This looks really jank!

It honestly looks like this was made by one inexperienced programmer, perhaps this was their first project? Seems like the kind of thing I'd make if I was old enough to program back then.  x_x

I think the thing that makes Rise of the Robots stand out among all of these bad fighters is that it had a massive budget, and a big publisher (Acclaim) attached to it, but Mirage's inexperience with fighting games combined with them being spread so thin having to publish on everything not made by Atari caused the actual game to turn out pretty terrible.

Actually, no, this isn't their first project, and guess what, the same developers of this stinker made a TERRIBLE FPS DOS game before this, it's like, called "Island Peril", Civvie11, if you know him, he DID make a video on Island Peril, and it's basicly the same *** quality.

Also, all the fighters in this game are porn stars, and so are some characters in Island Peril. :embarassed: The publisher of these 2 games actually own alot of, uhhhh, porn stars, apparently...

Oh, Brutalmoose did a video on it, it was hilarious!

Oh, and now here's another Catfight, Expect No Mercy, Matt Mc Muscles also did a video on it. It's, THAT, bad...

Oh wow! That is truly a stinker! I would love to try it one day xD

Another bad fighting game I want to try out is Fight for Life. It pushed the Jaguar to the limit and was made by someone who helped make the original Virtua Fighter. Even Matt seemed somewhat positive towards the game.

Street Fighter 1 (Or Fighting Street on PC-Engine CD), it sure is surprising that the game that started it all is a HUGE stinker, and i played it. Well, 80s fighting games were, never really liked this, its sequel however, was THE one to start it all, fast, fluid, not full of rules fighting game, that every fighting game after it has its DNA.

Yeah, Street Fighter 2 is a certified classic, though I've never been able to get i to any of the updated expansions or sequels. They changed the pace of the game and I feel that has ruined what they had.

Feels like Capcom's solution to improving a fighting game is to just make faster and faster.

I got the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection on PC, which includes the Street Fighter games up until like Alpha 3? I find myself playing the original 2 mostly, and some of 1 out of curiosity, and see where the series started.

Either way, always been more of a Mortal Kombat guy.

Speaking of...

How on earth did this get Nintendo's approval process?!
