Another thread I see on other forums that I enjoy taking part in. When you beat a game, you talk about it here and say your thoughts! I'll go first, with a pretty controversial game.

Finally got through this one and... I didn't think it was that bad...

I'm not calling it great. It's repetitive, clunky and glitchy as all hell, but would it call it bad? Not really. I'd call it mediocre.
The core mechanics of the game are actually pretty good. Flying around feels and sounds like it should and there are several of Superman's abilities you have access to, assuming you collect the relevant pick-ups. The controls are a little odd, though, like pressing R to jump...
The game even has a letterboxed mode, as well as other screen size options. (Probably done to give players modes to improve framerates, but it's still a nice inclusion!)
The game is also surprisingly ambitious. The outer world is massive! Sure, it's barebones and the fog is practically at your face, but even taking those into account, damn! There was so much potential here and there was clearly some ambition with the game.

The issue that most have is that the levels just aren't very well built around said mechanics, and the big hub world went to waste by making you flying through rings. Easy mode doesn't make you do this, but apparently only "Superman" mode lets you fully finish the game, so I went with that.
These are very valid criticisms, for the record, but they weren't enough to deter me from the game. In fact the ringed sections are great for turning your brain off and giving yourself something to do while listening to a video or audiobook or something.
To be honest, I hated the non-ring levels more, as the ring parts at least have checkpoints. In the mission sections, you have to traverse through small corridors clearing fairly vague objectives, all in one run. I had to use a guide a bit with these levels. It was nice seeing variety, though!
The last level though... oh my fucking god was it frustrating! I had to cheat to get through this!
You have to collect 12 pieces of a computer scattered throughout the level. To get some of them you need to beat certainty enemies so they will appear. You also have use laser eyes to disable lasers, and it doesn't make it clear where exactly you have to hit them and from where.
You also have to interact with computers to activate teleporters, but again, it doesn't tell you that you have to throw barrels at teleporters you could walk through, that have crab enemies coming out to attack you as you painstakingly carry this barrel around.
Then you get the final pieces, are told to turn it on by a scientist you encountered. Where is this computer? Well it's a pillar beside the scientist! Duh!
But wait! The computer was a decoy! Time well spent!
You have to then transport Jimmy trough a thunderdome room with a bridge. You do this by freezing him (because apparently that doesn't kill him) to avoid him getting shocked and then painstakingly pushing him by running into him, but make sure you are running straight, because if he falls off, it's game over!
Then you do the same thing with Lois, and then you beat Braniac in the thunderdome. He has a laser that is hard to avoid.
Then you find bombs to detonate, but you better go into the correct room as soon as you activate them, otherwise you lose!
Then the game is finally won... **** that last level!

If only Titus were allowed to actually make the game they planned. Wrestling with Gaming has a good video going over the game's very troubled development.

Matt McMuscles has a video on the game as well, but I haven't seen it yet.

While searching for another video on Superman 64, I found this review that actually mostly agrees with my opinion on the game!

So is this game good? Not particularly, but it certainly isn't the worst game I've ever played. I'd say it's a 4-5/10 game. If I had this as a kid, I probably would have loved it!
Should you pick it up? Well, if you are legit curious about the game, see through the bandwagon jumping, then I don't see why not!

...Well, apart from the inflated prices the game goes for, probably due to it's infamy. It was a top seller the year it came out, so it's not exactly rare!

It's worth pointing out that there is a cancelled PS1 game scheduled for release the following year, with several improvements made, most notably the absence of rings!
It was cancelled though, but a build has been leaked that I might give a shot![/youtube]

I believe the most 'recent' game I beat (not including Klonoa) was Plants Vs Zombies. Me and my brother beat the main adventure mode on March 18th though, so it was nearly a month ago. I think it'll still count for this topic though

I sometimes play this game with my brother. Quite a fun game, and I still enjoy it after all these years!

The music, the animation, the bonus modes, the challenging levels.. Plants Vs Zombies is a classic! Don't have much to say.  :)

I might would be interested in learning the history behind Superman64, but besides that, nah I'm good. I definitely wouldn't enjoy playing it

Yeah, another Titus game. This one was received fairly well, though, and yeah, it's decent. Controls work fine, and the AI and tracks are serviceable, although the former occasionally hits walls, letting you pass.
The problem is there really isn't much of anything to beat. It seems everything is unlocked from the get go and the controller pak is only used to save ghost data and best times.
Only thing pre-determined that you can go through is the arcade mode, where you go through 2 series of 3 courses each, so just got through those.

So yeah, decent game, but there's not much to it at all. I'd only consider it if you have friends to play with.

I recently beat Halo 3: ODST co-op on Heroic (I think?) with a good friend of mine, who happens to be a bit of a Halo connoisseur. We're just on a Halo Marathon of the sorts thanks to MCC on PC, we've been going through all of the games in it over the past months.

It's quite a noble departure from the rest of the series, unlike those games it puts you in the boots of an ODST soldier instead of a Spartan super soldier, meaning some gameplay mechanics are "nerfed" to immerse you into a lower ranking military unit. It also adds challenge somewhat, but it's not too difficult to wrap your head around if you're coming from the other games!

The art direction is also a radical improvement compared to stock Halo 3 and that game already looked alright for its time considering it came out quite early on during the Xbox 360's lifespan. ODST seems to take more advantage of the console's capabilities and adds more shading, more post effects and better characters models as well as higher quality assets all around.

The setup's quite different too, you navigate around this big far future metropolitan area and find artifacts that trigger a flashback into a whole other level, those constitute the missions you are tasked to complete in this game. It's kind of like Mario 64's world in a way.

I'm not sure about the story, it takes place during the opening act of Halo 2 except from the perspective of our ODST protagonist. I couldn't exactly tell what his main objective was, but he had to extract his squad and retrieve this precious cargo thing which I can't describe, plus there's some odd pseudo-romantic subplot that feels...really awkward in a Halo game. I'm still not sure what to think about it, but maybe I didn't pay much attention to the story.  :embarassed:

Pretty cool game all round, and apparently it's one of the more underrated games in the series. Go check it out and give it a shot! It is a pretty bombastic experience that you might not regret diving into!

It's no 1080, but it's a fun snowboarding game in it's own right, even if it was incredibly frustrating sometimes.

Doing tricks is satisfying to pull off. Sadly, doing so in a race serves no purpose and can slow you down, and in the stunt challenge, they set the score requirements too high for you to have any fun with them.

Commentary can be fun, though. They had a surfer kind of dude (for lack of a better term) commenting on your performance in the most 90s ways possible.

You nailed that landing/10

Wasn't as fun as the first game, but I enjoyed it. They tried to take from the Tony Hawk by adding a mode for manual trick combinations, but they went about it in a very weird way, where all of the face buttons did grabs, and holding down a shoulder button when ollieing did flips.
It just didn't feel right for a game like this even if I got used to it, so I switched to auto mode which makes it play like the first game where it automatically did tricks and which trick it does depends on the direction held, how fast you were going and what you were jumping off of.
The courses feel better suited to the auto scheme anyway, though they didn't feel as well designed as the first game. This time around I felt I had to do a lot of stopping and painstakingly turning to hit a ramp I miss to meet the score requirements of some levels.

Like the first game, you go from course to course, beating the time required to proceed to the next level, and in-between courses, you had vert sections where you scored to gain extra time for said level.
Once per career, you get 6 stat points to increase a skater's ability, which is a nice touch!
After beating all 3 career difficulties, the game also gave you the option to do street and vert courses on their them. Street was fine. It felt like a 4th level of difficulty, but vert felt broken. The score they set for the vert career mode was too high. I couldn't get the score playing auto or manual.
So I just did the "normal" and street career modes with every character and called it a day.

The game also boasts a create a park mode. It's not as good as Tony Hawk 2 had later that year. It's cool it's there, I guess, and might have loved it as a kid, but nowadays, I don't see the point in its inclusion.

If you enjoyed the first game, you'll probably enjoy this as well. It's dirt cheap as of writing this, so go for it!

Also, one of the characters is a spitting image of Riddick from the Vin Diesel film that came out a few years later, so that's cool.

I recently beat a game called Felvidek, it's an JRPG set in 15th century Slovakia, known as Felvidèk or Upper Hungary during that time.

In this game you play as an alcoholic knight known as Pavol.

You are accompanied with a priest known as Matej, you and Matej are invastegating the explosion that happened at the old castle.

What follows is a chain of events that includes Husites, Ottomans, a mysterious cult, mutants and other monstrosities.

The gameplay is what you expect, it's turn based combat.
The only thing that stands out are the ranged weapons, they work like spcial moves and are REALLY powerful.
And there is the issue that you can't see your enemy's HP.

I enjoyed the story a lot and there were plenty of moments were I head to laugh my *** off.

My biggest problem is that the game is way to short and it lacks varity of items, weapons, merchants ect.
The game ends, were it becomes really good :screaming:!!!
It's a really small game for 10 €, but I still expected a little bit more...  :(

I still think it's good, I had a blast while playing it.
And I REALLY like the style of this game. The soundtrack is fine, it just needed more combat tracks.

And I just realized that this game has no side quests, but it has quite a lot decisions to make.
It's kinda like a demo when I think about it...

Finally 100%ed this game. I unlocked every character and afaik, every costume.

I really enjoyed my time with this. Although some parts were very frustrating...

Had to beat this twice because I accidentally deleted my save the first time...
The game has a good soundtrack, excellent animations and great sound effects, some memorable level designs, but imo, not very good gameplay. It felt like it just didn't pay attention to my controller inputs half the time.

Manuals were just 1 second tricks with no balance meter and could only end a combo, rather than use them to continue the combo. Also if you manual and hit a slope going downward, you bail...
Grind Session came out before Tony Hawk 2 so I can't fault them too much on this, but these same guys did Freestyle Scooter a year later, and kept that in!

The objectives, while repetitive, were fine. Though they were teetering on bull**** hard by the final levels...

You unlock a "dream house" to skate in once you beat the levels you're presented in. You complete objectives to get "keys" to unlock new rooms. Pretty cool idea and would have loved to see this done with other games.

Was a valiant attempt, but it's a shame about the gameplay.

I had a blast on the first two Batman Arkham games on PC back to back  :D . They're some of the most fun thoughtfully constructed beat em up and stealthy action adventure games. I technically beat Arkham City on PS3 a long while back but the trilogy was on discount on Steam so I picked them up there!

Batman is one of my favorite superheroes of all time, although I've only got to experience his stories through games and movies and not the comics unfortunately. But these adaptations are the next best thing as the story and gameplay pacing go hand in hand.

The quality of the stories themselves are alright, they may not be the very best but I appreciate what we got, though don't expect the side missions to be too terrific because they are anything but. They hardly build on the characters that fulfill lesser roles unfortunately, but hey, at least they make for decent optional boss fights.

I prefer the more meticulous level design of Asylum over City's open world, but I highly appreciate the enhanced gadget mechanics of the latter. The line launcher being capable of firing at another angle mid-way is especially fun for puzzles.

Speaking of puzzles I do adore collecting the Riddler Trophies, especially for the fact that they unlock extra rewards like challenges or concept art. Though I can't say I'm a fan of some of the Riddler puzzles themselves...and of course I couldn't bring myself to get ALL of them because just like collecting 150 Dreams Stones in Klonoa Visions it can get tedious very quick

But anyways I highly recommend these excellent games, especially if you're a Batman fan. I'll be checking out Arkham Origins and Knight later on.
