I wonder how hard would it be to get an IRC chat.

I've seen it mentioned in shoutbox a couple of times.

I second this suggestion! ;D I think the shoutbox is starting to get a bit too crowded sometimes, so it'd be great if we could somehow implement this kind of thing :)

Definitely would be a cool thing

I would like this to become a thing, even if I'm completely unsure of what it even is...but it sounds interesting, so I'm in.

I don't real comfortable adding an IRC chat on here. It can be complex for those who don't know how to use it, on top of that anyone outside the forums can use it. While I do agree it's a bit cramped, I would like to save enough to get Shoutbox pro on the forums, as there's private rooms you can use and a bunch of other features too.

Hmm...chnging my opinion, I think I'll agree on Darai on this one, guys. Chatbox pro DOES sound more appealing to me, plus IMAGES on shoutbox. I just like that a fair bit more...

(Though, I don't mind guests using shoutbox, or such, as long as there's a captcha. Guests are people too, after all, and there's plenty of people out there (like I was) who may just wanna lurk for a while, and MAYBE make a single comment and leave. Just my two cents.

Rupurudu!

Also include me on the list.

There are a few ways to add IRC chat on the site, every one has it's own drawback.

We can create a channel on a free IRC server like freenode, and moderate it with a bot. (logging chat history, logins, etc.) However, there are always a chance of IRC admins delete the channel.

We can create our own server, but it's hard to operate and costly (more than shoutbox pro)

Or we can get shoutbox pro, like darai said.

Another alternative is get a good ajax chat and integrate it to SMF.
