Is Nintendo testing the water?

I hardly think that Bejeweled with a Pokemon theme is testing the waters. It probably won't come overseas.

RollingMeowcat

Actually, the game has come overseas already. :P

Released on 2/18, the Japanese version reached 1 million downloads on 3/2. Not fast enough for a Pokemon-themed game, isn't it?

There's a review: Nintendo has started making bad free-to-play games like everybody else
Wut.

Yup, sure did. In fact the next day after you made this topic, I saw it on my 3DS. xD

...Okay, this has been bugging me for a while now, [member=45]RollingMeowcat[/member]  ....and I do apologize if I'm sounding overly defensive of this...why is Genius Sorority bolded in the first post? I mean, they're responsible for making Pokemon Trozei, which is Exactly what this game is, minus the freemiun-based features. And Mega Evolution. And that's...kinda it. (They're also the folks responsible for Pokemon Colloseum and Pokemon XD. Just...let that sink in for a while.)

This isn't a BAD game, by any standards...Pokemon Trozei is a fun experience, after all. No, the reason this game should be disliked is because it's not on a MOBILE-based device. (...That, and because it's kinda boring compared to the OTHER 3DS Pokemon Trozei game. More on that later.

See, the 3DS is a dedicated gaming system. When people turn it on, they're usually gonna be playing for a while, yes? Now, on the other hand, people who might pull out an iPhone, iPad, or the like, may have just a bit less time to use. So, the game is more readily-accesible. Having it on the 3DS, it feels...kind of a waste. Hell, it seems like the content amount was desgned more with a lighter amount of playing in mind...something devices that aren't dedicated to gaming would be more inclined towards.

In essence, it's too little for a 3DS system...kinda like how putting something like, oh, say, HD versions of Final Fantasy I-VI, several Dragon Quest games (including the PS2 Dragon Quest VIIi), and TWEWY could be considered "too much" for mobile devices. [s]Seriously, Square. What ARE you thinking?[/s]

I guess it's not TOO BAD, until you remember that there's ALREADY a Pokemon Trozei game on the 3DS, anyways, making this game kinda...pointless in my eyes. Now, don't get me wrong: being a free-to-play game does NOT make a game bad. Hell, I've played some REALLY good ones (Whale Trail and Robot Unicorn Attack primarily comes to mind, but there's others, too). No, the problem is when the game has no care put into making it any different, or when its simply a clone of something else. I mean, this game IS essentially Candy Crush...though, arguably, Pokemon Trozei has been around MUCH longer than that, since the GBA. No, the fault here is that Gamefreak simply re-skinned this game to be more "appeasing" to this crowd. Freemium games that offer fun gameplay with purchases mainly for little things on the side that don't limit your playing is fine. Freemium games that require you to either pay to continue OR wait for an obscene amount of time before continuing, or have 90% of the game locked behind a $50+ Paywall are conpletely obscene, and are the reason why games like Final Fantasy: All the Bravest are the scum of the Earth. [s]Seriously, Square. WHY.[/s]

However, Rolling, I WILL admit that Nintendo likely IS "testing the waters". In fact, they're, in all likelyhood, thinking about making games on mobile devices. Yes, I know I linked to Cheeseburger, that's not the point here So this game was more than likely made just to see what people would think of Nintendo going through with this...maybe. But then, that begs the question...why was it even on the 3DS, as opposed to any other mobile device?...it just doesn't make sense, really. And it's not like Gamefreak haven't done so before, with Pokemon Camp being on mobile devices. (and hell, this isn't even their first attempt at free-to-play games- they had that one little game for 3DS download a while ago to promote the Diancie Movie) So....the only REAL problem with Pokemon Shuffle is, plain and simple, it's on the wrong device, so it's selling towards the wrong sort of crowd. The only reason it's even GETTING any downloads at all is due to name brand alone. Period. And...it really does deserve most of the critisism it gets.

Bottom line?

A game is not automatically bad if it is free-to-play. For a game should be judged not by the methods it asks for you to pay, but for its quality, visual appeal, and enjoyment factor. If paying for the game takes precedence over actually enjoying/playing it, or if the game was poorly-made and rushed out with no heart or soul invested into it JUST for the creator to make a quick buck, then it is, indeed, bad.

Sorry if my post was a bit long, but I had some things I felt had to me mentioned on the subject.

>Read the article

>The Verge

>LOL

I don't read The Verge because they're Apple shills. Plus if you read through that article, this person knows very little of Nintendo, even less about the 3DS.  It was a rather terribly written opinion piece (I can't even call it a review because The Verge doesn't know how to do that honestly)

Sable-Xeno

...Okay....so...the article I linked to was bad for reasons OTHER than being from Cheeseburger. That hardly takes away from my main point here: Freemium games DO NOT WORK on dedicates gaming systems, and not ALL freemium games are bad...though, Sturgeon's Law greatly applies here.

...Wait. You were referring to ROLLING'S article? Well, I kinda knew that article was bad WHEN THEY COMPLETELY OVERLOOKED THE FACT THAT POKEMON TROZEI EVEN EXISTED IN THE FIRST PLACE.
